Protect Your Jewelry!

It is very exciting to receive jewelry from a loved one, or to give as a gift.  During the holidays, it’s is enjoyable when we get something so valuable.  It becomes important to us.  We want to show it off right away and maybe even wear every day.  One thing to keep in mind when getting something so cherished, although not as fun but equally as important is insurance.
Remember that you may need to purchase additional coverage for these items.  Your homeowner’s policy may cover valuable items such as jewelry but there are limitations.  If the cost of replacing your jewelry exceeds those sub limits, you want to make sure that you purchase scheduled personal property coverage for them.  Check your policy for your limitations, or contact your local agent.
When purchasing the jewelry, you may want to ask to get a copy of an appraisal or detailed receipt.  Depending on your insurance carrier, their requirements may vary on what they need to schedule these items and how they can be covered.

Although pictures are not necessary, they can be very helpful if the item ever gets lost or stolen.  Jewelry can also sometimes be recreated by the jeweler if there is a good photograph to work from.

Winter Storms Ahead, Are You Ready?

Winter storms can mean traffic snarls, hillsides turning to sheets of ice, cars skidding, and accidents.  Cold temperatures can even cause havoc to your homes.  Pipes can burst, frost swells, and other damages can occur because of the temperature.  Heating your home with fireplaces and holiday lighting can be beautiful and can bring warmth, but it also increases your risk of fire.  Winter time is a great time to use extra caution all around!

To reduce weather related hassles, winter proof your car with good tires and chains as necessary.  New wiper blades should be added before it starts raining, but if not, the time is now! You should check your anti-freeze and make sure to carry around emergency road supplies.

Keep your attic cool and insulate the attic floor for good ventilation.  Do not overload your circuits with too much holiday decorations as this can be a fire hazard.  When the air is cold, keep your bath and kitchen cabinet doors open so warm air can circulate around the pipes.  If the pipes freeze, let them thaw out normally so they are less likely to burst.  If you light candles or fireplaces, do not leave it unattended.

When you are prepared for the weather, you can be more relaxed and help lessen any winter damage.
