Protecting Your Home During Rain Season

As winter continues, so does heavy rainfall in all parts of the country. We all know that rainstorms help with new plant growth and help prevent droughts. But that same rain can also cause damage to your home, if it is not properly protected. Here are a few tips to help you protect your home during winter rain storms
Make sure that your gutters are properly draining. Gutter clogs for example, can wreak havoc on the roof and cause shingles to follow and a leak in your roof to occur. Make sure that your gutters are not getting clogged with debris and are properly draining.

In most cases, including in our home, we may not realize that there is a leak in the roof until it’s coming through the ceiling. But a leak can occur, without you being able to see it. A leak can occur in your crawl space, for example. Or through a damaged seal in a window or door. Make sure that you inspect your home or have a professional inspect it, before the winter months and after. While it may be hard to find a leak, inspecting your home and finding one early can help negate a large loss.

Don’t forget to check the exterior of your home as well. If the area on the exterior of your home is not draining correctly, issues can occur. For example, check the storm drains outside of your home. Storm drains can easily get clogged with debris, which can cause major issues. Keep drains clear of clogs and make sure that water is not running off into your foundation.

Protecting Your Personal Wealth as a Small Business Owner

In 2018, many people, perhaps even including yourself, will start business. When you start a new business, it is very important that you protect your own personal wealth. There are a few things that you can do to proactively help protect your personal wealth. Consulting with professionals is the first step towards that, but what professionals should you reach out to?

Set Up the Right Legal Entity

Consulting with an attorney or lawyer can help you decide what type of legal entity is correct for your business. Having your business in a Corporation or an LLC can help shield your personal assets from a potential loss. For example, if someone were to sue you as a sole proprietor, they may try to go after your personal assets. You can negate the possibility of this by having your business set up as a corporation.

Get the Right Insurance

Another layer of protection for your business is insurance. It is not only important to have insurance to protect your business, it is important to have the right insurance. Consulting with an insurance broker, such as Stone Creek, helps you find the right coverage. It is our job to make sure that we understand your business and your insurance needs. When a loss happens, you’ll want to make sure you have the right insurance in place to protect your business.

Separate Your Business Assets from Your Personal Assets

Reach out to an accountant to have your business finances separated from your personal finances. Having a separate bank account(s) for the business helps protect your personal assets.

Have a Contingency Plan

If you or someone you know is starting a business and would like a quote, give us a call! We are here to assist in finding the correct policy to fit your business needs.
