Upgrading your Home? Here's What You Need To Know.

Expanding your home or remodeling it can be very exciting!  It may even help to lift your home value. The ability to help design a floor plan and selecting furniture is a lot more interesting than preparing your insurance plans, but it is equally as important.  If you are thinking of doing any renovations or additions to your home, reviewing the replacement cost to rebuild home should be part of the process.  Adding value to your home may change your premium, but if it is not updated, you can run the risk of under-insuring your home.  Expanding your home directly impacts your  need to increase your dwelling coverage.  In addition, your property policy may not be the right fit. Instead, you may need a course of construction policy.
It is your responsibility to let your agent know before the works starts and after it is completed.   Insufficient coverage can leave your family vulnerable to losses that you as a home owner may end up absorbing.  Reviewing the changes you make to your home can help insure it properly and potentially find savings that you may have not thought when you upgrade your roof, plumbing, electrical wires, and heating.  If you are uncertain about having enough/the correct coverage, give your insurance agent a call.

Home Security

Keeping our homes secure from intruders is definitely something that we all want as homeowners.  However, with the costs associated with alarm system, not everyone wants to install them.  Plenty of homeowners prefer the D-I-Y method and purchase cameras and monitors on their own that they self-monitor.  One thing that we need to keep in mind when selecting this method for safety is how reliable they are.  Here are some tips that can assist you while shopping for security systems and to keep burglars away:

  • Cameras: some are set up wirelessly or the ability to record footage for a later review. Software is available that uses your laptop camera in a general direction and you can check the images from a remote location.

  • Lights: Motion detection lights are excellent in discouraging burglars because of visibility. Install them near the entry way and in places where they cannot be easily detached.

  • Timers for Lights: These will help deter burglars because it makes it appear that someone is home.

  • Alarms: Vibration alarms are now available for windows. Similar monitors can also be installed near doors and programmed to make noise if a person comes from a specified distance.

  • Keep your home locked and garage doors closed when you are not around.

  • Do not leave your keys outside. Instead, think about leaving your keys with a trusted friend or neighbor if you are going on vacation or need to leave an extra key.

  • Watch the landscaping for potential hiding spots. Keep bushes well-trimmed.

  • If going away for vacation, cancel your newspaper and other deliveries. Ask a neighbor to watch your home.

  • Do not post your vacation on social media or put it on your voicemail.
