Summer Energy Savings

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, $11 billion dollars is spent on air conditioning in the U.S.  If you are writing the check for P.G. & E, this may come as no surprise.  To help save you some money this summer, here are some ideas to keep your home cool and your pockets fuller.

  • Make sure your home is properly insulated and sealed. Homes that are not properly, warm air can leak into your home causing your home to heat up faster.

  • Make sure there are no cracks or openings on your ducts, this can result in up to 30% of the energy a cooling system uses.

  • Make sure heat is not on in your oven, stove, or any appliance that generates heat.

  • Use your dryer and dishwasher at cooler temperatures.

  • Create your own personal cooling zone, where you can set up fans and drink plenty of fluids.

  • Keep your curtains closed and minimize the use of lights.

Campsite Security

It’s 2017, and we all want to travel with our electronics! But…do you really want to go camping with your laptop or tablet? Are you going to watch a movie instead of roasting marshmallows? If so, then here is a list for you to make sure that you have fun and not have to worry about damaging your personal property:

  • Make a list, and check it twice! Make an inventory of what you are bringing with you to make sure you don’t forget anything when you come home.

  • If you are going out, lock it up! The best place to hide your stuff when you are camping is where you can lock it. If you are staying in a tent, hide your electronics in the trunk of your car.

  • Create a neighborhood watch group. Get to know your campsite neighbors to help increase friendships and safety.  Ask them to watch your site, if you are leaving for a while.

  • Don’t forget the animals! A bear looking for food is not going to want to take your iPad, but they are not going to tip-toe around your expensive items either. Clean up your site, especially after you eat.  Animals are attracted to the food and garbage left out at campsites.

  • Ask the park or around about security. Ask the people that work at the campground what you should watch for.  Ask if there are any thefts or any perils you need to know about.  Ask the campers that have been there longer than you have if there are any specific safety hazards they know about.

This list won’t guarantee that you won’t ruin your electronics or that it will not be stolen, but it gives you some ideas of what you can do to help prevent from ruining your fun.
