Staying Safe In The Water This Summer

As the heat rises in the summer, many people head out to the lakes and other bodies of water to cool down and to have some fun.  Jet Skis and wave runners are becoming more popular because it is fun and more easily accessible than a boat. However, these machines are fast and can present their own dangers.  So, here are some summer safety tips:

  • Follow the U.S. Coast Guard boating regulations, both drivers and passengers must abide by these rules.
  • Make sure that you are aware of the laws governing your specific state before hitting the water; many are state specific and work in addition to the U.S. Coast guard’s regulations.
  • Make sure that your boat or machines are properly equipped with flotation devices, life jackets, kill-switch safety, whistles, fire extinguisher, horn, etc.
  • Be prepared with Safety Gear: Owner’s manual, first-aid kit, flares, tows ropes, sunscreen, helmet, sunglasses, etc.
  • Know your load/weight limits
  • Be familiar with your destination, stay away from rocks, pilings, etc.
  • Be Alert! Stay sober and try to avoid water sports after dark. It is harder to see.

Smartphones & Traveling

Almost everyone carries their smartphones everywhere.  Why not? It is our life line with an all-inclusive access to our bank accounts, social media accounts, emails, maps, restaurants, reviews, cameras, movies, and all other travel tools.  You no longer need to carry around maps, cameras, and computers separately, you can now just bring your smart phone if you want.
The downside to traveling with smartphones is misplacing or having it be stolen.  Would you know what to do then?  With peak summer travel around the corner, here are some pointers that we would like you to remember.

  • Power up! Remember to charge your phone overnight before a trip. If you forget your charger, check with your hotel to see if they have extras on site that you can borrow. Having an external charger are also ideal in case you are out sightseeing with no access to an outlet.

  • Lock up your phone. Using passwords are essential and can make an enormous difference in protecting your personal information that is on your phone. Most of us have our bank information, emails, and other personal data that you don’t want people opening.

  • Consider software to locate your lost/stolen phone. Find my iPhone is an example that can remotely wipe your personal information if your phone is stolen.

  • Remember to back up your phone before traveling

  • Be aware of your surroundings, millions of phones are stolen every year and by just being conscious of what is around you helps to scare would be thieves if they see you are paying attention.
