Easy Steps To Creating a Home Inventory

We all know that you need to report a claim as soon as it happens. And we’ve all seen the storms that have riddle the US and other countries this past year. What we sometimes don’t think about is what information we must have when we file said claim and it’s the last thing you want to worry about in the event of a disaster. Having a home inventory already complied, up to date and backed up digitally, will save you stress; especially in the case of a total loss to your home. While no one can predict a disaster, break in or fire, we can prepare. Below are some tips to easily put a home inventory together:

  1. Take your time when compiling your inventory. You will want your inventory as detailed and accurate as possible.
  2. Take photos or videos of your home inventory. A walk-through video or set of pictures is great to have. Make sure to update these every so often, to ensure accuracy.
  3. Save your inventory and corresponding photos/videos digitally, so that you can access to them anywhere. Having this information only in your home won’t allow it to be pulled if a total loss occurs. Online back up services can be used to digitally back up this information.
  4. Update your inventory at least one a quarter. If you buy a big-ticket item, make sure to add it to your inventory when you make that purchase.
  5. Keep valuable items in a safe place and make sure that you detail these purchases on your inventory. Make sure you speak with your agent to verify that items such as jewelry, collectibles and art are adequately insured.

If you have any questions regarding your current policy coverage, give us a call to review your coverage.

Preventing Slip and Falls

In the past few Newsletters we have talked about winterization for your home, but not for your business. As many know, slip and fall claims can become costly. In the winter months these claims are more likely to occur if precautions aren’t taken. This month we’d like to share some quick tips to try to help prevent slip and fall claims both during the winter months and the rest of the year.

  1. If you located in an area with snow, have snow removal procedures in place. Don’t wait until the snow falls, make sure these procedures are in place immediately and that your staff is aware. If you are a building owner, make sure you, the property management company and tenants all understand these procedures and enforce them.
  2. After storms, be sure to immediately salt or sand paths. Remember, rain water can easily freeze and call a slip and fall hazard. Just as much as snow can.
  3. Have the right snow removal contract in place. Make sure that all vendors you use to remove snow have adequate insurance and have you listed as an additional insured on their liability.
  4. Keep floors as dry as possible year-round. Whether it’s the water brought in my melting snow or water from a mop, make sure the floors are dry. When floors are wet, make sure to put up caution signs and the correct warnings. If you have areas of your building that are prone to freezing, makes sure to have signs up year-round to be cautious.
