Holiday Driving

Millions of Americans travel around the holidays, with a large percentage opting to drive to destination.  Fall and winter creates more challenges on the roadway.  At Stone Creek Insurance, we would like to ensure that you remain safe.  So, here are some winter-travel safety tips.

  • Check your windshield wipers to ensure they are in good working condition, replace as needed.
  • Tires should be in good shape for driving through the wet or snowy road.
  • Check your radiator, headlights, and cooling systems
  • Have an emergency kit that includes: jumper cables, blankets, flares, food and water
  • Carry a flashlight and other safety gear in your car
  • Bring a shovel and cat litter or sand if you are going to be near snow/ice
  • Print your maps and get familiarized with where you are going
  • Check the weather conditions before you leave
  • If your visibility is low, or it’s raining or snowing, it is a good idea to drive slowly.
  • Give yourself some extra time and extra room between cars.
  • Be careful of other road hazards and ice patches on the road, especially near the bridges and overpasses.
  • If you get caught in the storm pull over or stay indoors if possible.
  • If you get disabled, try to find a safe place to stay or stay with your car. Run your engine and heater in short intervals as needed, and open your windows slightly to prevent carbon monoxide build up.  Use the tools in your emergency kit as applicable.

From all of us here at Stone Creek Insurance Agency… We hope you enjoy your holidays and stay safe!

Have you leak proofed your home this winter?

We all know that winter can be hectic when it comes to planning for the holidays and travel.  One thing we need to remember before we take off for our winter break is to make sure we check for leaks.  Even a small leak can become a huge problem later.  Understanding your coverage and knowing how to minimize your damage can be very important.  With all the rain and snow this winter, we have come up with some tips for you to uncover any potential water problems and to help insure that you keep your property dry this winter.

  • Check appliance hoses. Replace rubber hoses with steel braided ones.
  • Fix broken tiles in the shower as this can allow water to leak into the walls or flooring.
  • Replace cracked tiles and re-grout as needed
  • Run dishwasher and washing machine only when you are home
  • When leak occurs, turn off your appliances right away
  • When on vacation, turn off your home’s main water supply
  • Make sure your storm drain are free of leaves and debris
  • Install a gutter guard, this can help prevent drain clogs and flooding
  • Install a water pressure gauge
