Earthquake Safety

October is earthquake safety month and International Shake out day is set on October 19. Everyone, everywhere should participate and practice earthquake safety not just in October. One important thing to ask yourself is would you remember to: drop, cover, and hold on?

Here are some tips to keep yourself and your family safe:

  • Practice Drop, cover, and hold on with all the members of your household
  • Remember that doorways are no stronger than any part of a structure, so get under a sturdy piece of furniture instead and hold on
  • Assemble an emergency preparedness kit
  • Create a household evacuation plan that include your pets
  • Download the emergency app on your phone
  • Stay informed about your community’s risks and response plans
  • Check with your workplace to see what their emergency plans are
  • Pick safe zones in your home and work ahead of time
  • Make sure you have access to NOAA radio station
  • Keep a flashlight and low-heeled shoes by each person’s bed
  • Bolt and brace water heaters and gas appliances to wall studs, have a professional install flexible fitting to avoid gas or water leaks
  • Do not hang heavy items such as pictures, mirrors, near beds, couches and anywhere people sleep or sit
  • Install strong latches or bolts on cabinets
  • Large or heavy items should be closest to the floor
  • Know how to shut off the gas valves in your home and keep a wrench handy for that purpose
  • If you are in bed, stay there, curl up and hold on, cover your head
  • Stay indoors until the shaking stops and you are sure it’s safe to exit
  • If you are in a car, pull over to a clear location and stop. Keeping your seatbelt fastened.
  • Avoid bridges, overpasses, and power lines if possible

Small Business Disaster Planning

When disaster hits, we know how important protecting your small business is. Catastrophe’s come in many forms; natural disasters, power outages, technology failure, cyber-attacks and product recall are just a few examples. While these events are unpredictable, there are ways that you can be proactive and prepare for a disaster.

Below are a few tips to help you prepare for a disaster and create a disaster recovery plan.

  • Keep a running inventory – Keeping a running inventory helps expedite assessing the damage after a disaster hits.
  • Keep up to date contacts handy – Know who to call when a disaster hits and during the aftermath.
  • Keep your agent informed – Call your agent as soon as possible when a loss occurs so that they can assist you and notify your insurance company. Do not wait to report a loss.
  • Delegate Tasks – Team work will help speed up assessing the loss and addressing issues. Assign tasks before a disaster hits to help both the staff and yourself prepare. Have these tasks and assignments included in your disaster recovery plan.

What about after a disaster?

Below are a few tips to help you know what to do after a disaster:

  • Make sure all employees are safe
  • Alter first responders and law enforcement immediately if needed
  • Examine the damage and make sure the building is still safe to be in
  • Implement your disaster recovery plan
  • Call your agent and insurance company to notify them of the loss
