Staying Safe In School Zones

As the weather cools, and the rainy season begins, we should all start to be cautious on the roads.  Remember to slow down in the school zones and around the school buses.  One thing to keep in mind are the bicycles!  Here are some tips to help ensure that both drivers and students remain safe at the school zones.

  • Be extra careful when driving around school, especially before and after school. There are going to be a lot of students on the streets and sidewalks within walking distance of the school.
  • Watch for school zones, which are normally marked with flashing signs indicating to lower your speed.
  • Follow school bus rules! Do not pass the bus on either side of the road when the red lights are flashing. As the lights stop flashing, ensure no kids, bikes or cars are coming.  Kids can be unaware of their surroundings.
  • Allow yourself extra time so that you are not in a rush to drop your kids off at school.
  • Teach your kids to be safe while walking. Do not text and walk.
  • Use crosswalks and make sure they look at both sides before walking across the street.
  • Make sure you make eye contact with drivers. Do not assume drivers can see you.
  • Be conscious of cars that are turning and backing.
  • Do not go into the street from behind a vehicle.
  • Use sidewalks and walking paths. Walk facing the traffic and walk as far to the left as possible if none is available.
  • If possible, look for a crossing guard to help you cross the street more safely.
  • Do not chase balls or pets across the street. Make sure to follow the safety guidelines first before your cross.
  • If riding a bicycle to school, make sure the child wears a helmet and proper padding if necessary.
  • Encourage your kids to walk their bikes across the street.
  • Make sure your child knows not to permit passengers on their handlebars.
  • Establish a curfew and ask your kids not to ride their bikes in the dark.
  • Make sure you child uses good judgement.
